Throughout the season, the club holds a variety of competitions for its members. Members are also encouraged to participate in external competitions and salons for which guidance is available. These include events organised by the Yorkshire Photographic Union and national and regional events organised by the Rushden, Southport and Evesham clubs.

In addition the club is part of an Inter-Club competition involving 10 other local groups who compete using projected digital images.

The club now accepts (according to the competition) entries in one or more of 4 image formats: colour print; monochrome print; transparency (slide); and projected digital image. The last two formats may be combined for some competitions.

During the year, five rounds of competition are held for the Ingram Series of awards within the club amongst two separate groups of members. Club members represent the majority of the membership whilst Advanced Workers are an invited group of members whose work over a period of time has been judged by the committee to show a consistently high standard of technique and compositional skill.

The subjects of the 5 rounds of the Ingram Series are pictorial; people and figure studies; general record and architecture; sport, action and photojournalism; together with an open round. Details of the dates for the submission of images for each round are clearly shown on the programme page.

Several other competitions are held through the year that are open equally to all members of the club. The Sherburn Trophy (monochrome prints), and Bob Evans/Raffles Trophy (colour print) are one-off competitions for which entrants submit sets of 3 prints. The Dean Brothers Trophy is awarded for a set of 3 projected images. The Les Smith Natural History Trophy is awarded for the best projected image.

Finally, each year, the chairman announces a subject for the Chairman's Competition. Details of the dates for all these open contests are clearly shown on the programme page.
